"In the Heights” won the 2008 Tony Award for best musical, a salute to the bodega-dotted Upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights. The soap opera struggles of Latino tenement dwellers creates an occasion for a salsa-swinging block party even when trouble hits in the form of a city black-out. Conceived by the composer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has a leading role in the cast, the show brings a multicultural sound and sensibility an evening of feel-good musical entertainment.
