Another Candle on the Birthday Cake

What great fun to celebrate Susie's birthday party at the Santa Monica Pier and Seaside Pavilion on Friday night. Sips, Snacks and complimentary games and rides was so much more than we bargained for. Elle Magazine hosted an outdoor screening of Adventureland while the waves crashed on shore and the roller coaster looped by above our heads. Happy Birthday, Ms. Dobson, and thank you for including me in your posse of extraordinary friends.

Catch the Dream!

The Ahmanson Theater just opened their season with a showstopper you won't want to miss. "Dreamgirls"tells the rags-to-riches story of an up and coming 1960's girl group and the triumphs and tribulations that come with fame and fortune. Caught the dream and had a great evening of song and dance. Now throught April 11th.

Annual Beverly Hills Economic Summit

One of the speakers at today's Beverly Hills Economic Summit opened with this line from Paul Valery, "The Trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be." Of course, Thomas Higgins, Chief Economist at Payden & Rygel Investment Counsel got the first laugh of the day from the distinguished panelists and the audience of leading Beverly Hills business representatives. There was general [soft] optimism amongst the panelists who ranged from the high-end retail side to investment companies.

Welcome Missoni

A west coast Missoni fashion house has been long overdue! We're so glad that the iconic Italian designer is calling Rodeo Drive 'home'. Missioni has created a remarkable, modernistic building that uses its exterior facade to mimic the woven fabrics that have made the fashion designer so famous. As you walk in the enormous white doors, the walls and displays play like a long procession of swimwear, women's wear, men's wear, accessories and home furnishings. Only steps from Luxe Hotel Rodeo Drive, we recommend that you shop 'til you drop.

Driving and cell phones

"Ooops - I didn't know, officer". I was stopped yesterday by a Beverly Hills police officer [on motorcycle] for talking on my cell with both ear buds in my ears. He was very polite and informed me that I could only have one in my ear at any time. So just passing this note along.

Black History Month: Milestones

During the month of February, the Paley Center will honor achievements and milestones in African-American culture with screenings of everything from the Million Man March, the Black Panther trials, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech to such groundbreaking shows as Julia, I, Spy, Roots, The Jeffersons, and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. "The premiere screenings, panel discussions, and photography exhibits showcase both the Paley Center's dedication to giving its members a multidimensional and interactive experience and the many ways in which the media has played a role in documenting key moments and issues in African-American culture." Pat Mitchell, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Paley Center for Media http://www.paleycenter.org

Year of the Tiger

As everyone knows, yesterday was Valentine’s Day, but it was also the Chinese New Year, and an especially auspicious one. This Chinese New Year, based on the Lunar Calendar, is the Year of the Tiger, which is a year that supports taking action—seizing opportunities and making the most of your special talents. The year of the Metal Tiger signifies both the energy to begin activity and the determination to follow it through to the end. Forget about last year’s slow plodding. Events set in motion now will pick up speed and continue until either the objective is attained or the whole endeavor crashes and burns.

Love can be simple

In a world where products are out as soon as they're in, where communicating without wires doesn't come without strings, and even our accessories need accessories, we need simple tools. A book that helps us look inside because we are overloaded outside from Taschen Books. For that simple gift and only steps from Luxe Hotel Rodeo Drive. Seen here is the cover of Taschen's classic book of graphics celebrating the holiday of love during the period of 1900 to the 1960s.http://www.taschen.com/

The Lightening Thief

Over the weekend, a client called from San Juan Capistrano asking me to find someone to travel to Hollywood and pick up two tickets for a film screening of The Lightening Thief [based on a book series]. There was a boutique in the Hollywood and Highland Complex selling Thief t-shirts which came with invitations to meet the teen actors in person. With luck, I purchased two of the last remaining 12 wristbands, strode out onto Hollywood Blvd and found myself in the middle of tourist mania. As long as I was there, I figured that I might as well look for Michael Jackson's star on the Walk of Fame and put my shoes into a few footprints at Mann's Chinese Theater.

Unhappy Hipsters

Overheard twittering between two shoppers at Alberta Ferretti last week about this web page. Lo and behold the Los Angeles Times runs an article about the 'Mad Satire of Mod Homes' in today's HOME Section. Not to mention that my DWELL magazine came in the mail this morning. According to the LA Times, "The website Unhappy Hipsters http://www.unhappyhipsters.com/ is the most welcome addition to the often self-serious world of architecture and design in recent memory, not to mention a pocket of satirical warmth in the middle of a soggy, recessionary, earthquake-wracked Martha Coakley winter." It's lonely in the modern world!

Wacky but wonderful

I went to Barneys Greengrass for lunch on Friday and had to stop and take a photo of those wacky but wonderful store front windows. Barneys New York always seems to thrive in these imaginative scenarios whether it's that holiday tree in the department store entry or the posters on the elevator walls. Who else would string a hundred silver pot scrubbers together and call it a garland? Let the creativity flow!

The Female of the Species

The Geffen Playhouse held a full dress rehearsal of their new production written by Joanna Murray-Smith last night. The 'feminist' best selling writer and professor was performed perfectly and passionately by Annette Bening. I hate to admit it but I was there for the evolution of feminism and the change in perspective and expectations it wrought on my generation of women. About halfway through, men begin to enter the scene and we get to experience the often confusing effects of the last 30 years on the male of the species. The ensemble cast made the piece great fun. Then, of course, being seated behind the great Warren Beatty, was icing on this feminist's cake. Seen here with Pamela Tretter, of The Empty Vase. http://www.geffenplayhouse.com/

Seen in the Lobby

Lisa Raye was all over Beverly Hills today. Meeting and greeting fans and being followed by a posse of camera wielding men.

Do we have the perfect space for you?

Hello Wendy,
Thanks so very much for the lovely fruit tray delivered to my room last night. As always the Luxe is my home away from home.
I need to ask a favor, would you please let me know availability of the Penthouse suites for March 2 through March 7. My company would like to utilize the Luxe to show Piaget High Jewellery and Timepieces in preparation for the Oscars. I appreciate your help with this.
Best wishes,
Nadine [Sales Manager Western Region, Piaget North America]

Opening reception: Week-End

The culmination of a trilogy that began with Polyester and The Big Valley, photographer Alex Prager's Week-End began as organically as her other series. Inspired by the high drama of classic movies, her images seem exquisite on the surface, yet conceal pain beneath the dead eyes. These perpetual blue skies and imported palm trees in the LA landscape underlie a sense of eerie monotony and unease. Running from January 30th through March 6th at M+B Gallery in West Hollywood. It's great in that creepy way. http://www.mbfala.com/
